Headache may be a symptom of a COLD, but it also accompanies a wide range of disorders, from emotional stress to brain damage. A mild headache may be relieved by aspirin or acetaminophen. • A headache that occurs with breathing difficulty, chest pain, fever and a painful cough that produces yellow, pink or rust-colored mucus may be a symptom of PNEUMONIA, a bacterial or viral infection of the lungs. Consult a physician as soon as possible.

• A child’s headache accompanied by breathing difficulty, fever, swallowing difficulty, severe sore throat, and nausea and vomiting may be caused by DIPHTHERIA, a bacterial infection of the throat. Consult a physician immediately.

• A headache that occurs with fever, a neck so stiff that touching the chin to the chest is impossible, and changes in consciousness may be caused by either MENINGITIS, a bacterial or viral infection of the spinal cord, or ENCEPHALITIS, a viral infection of the brain.
