Other people should choose the recipe with the smallest amount of anticholinergic indicated on the label, all other therapeutic features being comparable.
Nasal decongestants produce a stimulating effect on the nervous system that causes small blood vessels to constrict. In a cold victim, they act on swollen blood vessels in the mucus-secreting areas of the nose, causing the vessels to shrink to normal size. The constriction results in reduced blood flow, reduced fluid in surrounding tissues and more open space in the nasal passages. This is important for dry cough from allergies treatment.
Breathing may become easier, drainage of the nose and sinuses may return to normal, and pain due to irritation of nerve endings in the nose may diminish as pressure is relieved.

The forms differ chiefly in their duration of action and in the hazards they present to persons with such chronic conditions as hyperthyroidism, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes, which are aggravated by any constriction of blood vessels.
