Choosing An Air Filter To Reduce Hay Fever Suffering
It is important that when choosing an air filter to reduce hay fever suffering you understand exactly what the disease is and how you contract the condition. Hay fever (allergic coryza; pollinosis) is a rhinitis induced by airborne pollens and, therefore, characterized by a seasonal occurrence. The spring type, the so-called rose cold, apparently stimulated by the pollens of certain trees (oak, elm, poplar and others), occurs from late March to early June; the summer type is induced by the pollens of certain grasses (such as timothy or red top); and the fall type, which develops from the middle of August to the first frost, is stimulated particularly by pollens of the ragweed family.
Each year the attacks begin and end approximately the same dates. Usually the rhinitis starts in the mucous membrane of the nose, which may become so edematous and swollen that the nostrils are closed completely. The nasal mucous membrane itches, burns and secretes a thin irritating discharge. Violent paroxysms of sneezing are the rule. The eyes, usually also involved, become red, burn and lacrimate.
Sensitivity tests are conducted on the patient’s hypersensitivity to the pollens that induce his attacks often, but not always, may be confirmed by proper skin, conjunctiva or intradermal tests. Though spectacular, these reactions are not necessarily specific. The dosage of the pollen injected is important, and the majority of patients are hypersensitive not to one but to several pollens, and under testing conditions, they may not react to the specific pollens that induce their attacks. Ragweed seems to be the most potent of all.
The best treatment of hay fever, if the nasal passages and the para nasal sinuses otherwise are normal and, especially, if the attacks began in childhood, is a seasonal change of climate. When and to where, however, depends on the experience of the individual case. Nasal sprays containing ephedrine help some persons. Sinusitis or other nasal lesions that may be present should be treated thoroughly during the free seasons. Various eyewashes relieve the conjunctivitis.
Prophylactic injections of extracts of the pollens that seem to be involved in each case (usually, mixed vaccines of nonspecific proteins are used), given once each week, beginning each successive year several months before and continuing during the attacks, relieve the coryza symptoms in a fair percentage of cases but do not cure the condition. Antihistamine therapy during the active phase is of symptomatic benefit in the majority of patients. It must be noted that the process of choosing an air filter to reduce hay fever suffering must be done with consultation of your personal physician.. |
